Scotland had the highest employment rate in the United Kingdom and over the past year the employment rate had increased by 1.7 percentage points. From the mid 1990s, Scotland’s employment rate was steadily increasing, reaching a peak of 74.9 per cent during the second calendar quarter of 2007, although over the past three years, Scotland’s employment rate, along with the other countries of the UK, had been at a lower level as a result of the economic conditions.
Task 2 In many countries women are allowed to have maternity leave for the first months. Do you think the advantages outweigh the disadvantages?
为何会有产假?显然,产妇需要时间恢复身体,培养亲子关系等。但,产假可能让产妇失去晋升的机会,延迟加薪。想得远些,会推迟享受退休金,甚至丢掉工作;
Maternity leave is a temporary period of absence from employment granted to new mothers during the months immediately after childbirth. These policies are generally aimed at supporting the mother's full recovery from childbirth, and facilitating a stronger mother-child bond.
The figures show one in seven of the women surveyed had lost their job while on maternity leave; 40% said their jobs had changed by the time they returned, with half reporting a cut in hours or demotion. More than a tenth had been replaced in their jobs by the person who had covered their maternity leave.
