Vacant state-owned residential properties 空置的国有住宅房屋in Melbourne's west should be redeveloped重整 装修 to tackle the surging public housing waiting list, lobby groups say.

An audit of vacant land and empty homes by the Victorian Public Tenants Association has called for the "revitalisation重获新生" of properties in Braybrook.

The audit includes 21 properties, some of which have been heavily vandalised破坏, and raises concerns引起关心 about damage to the neighbourhood's amenity.

Victorian Public Tenants Association chairperson Margaret Guthrie said Braybrook offered good public transport and "social infrastructure社区设施" making it ideal for public housing development.

"Given the scarcity of funding 资金短缺 for new public housing we should seriously consider how to best use these valuable assets," she said.

Long-time Braybrook resident and community volunteer Lorraine Kennedy said many of the abandoned houses废弃房屋 in her neighbourhood were "good strong homes" that could be used to house the needy.

Housing Minister Martin Foley said the state government was committed to increasing social housing.

Mr Foley cited the recent announcement to refurbish重修 an estate in Ashburton as an example of the government's commitment to social housing.

The department continually reviewed its "asset strategy资产战略" in response to current and future needs, he said.

RMIT Centre for Urban Research director， Jago Dodson， said much of Melbourne's public housing was built in the 1950s and 1960s. "Although it was good quality at the time a reasonable proportion of it has started to reach the end of its usable life," he said.
