News Today - many students in Year 9 chose their courses for their Yr 10. Some of them selected Managing Your Finance which is very useful. The text below is an example.

Case Study

Paul works full time at a construction site. He earns $850 net per week.  His wife Robyn works 2 days a week at a local supermarket and earns $225 per week

They have one child Spencer who attends kindergarten on the days that Robyn is at work.

They need to look at their expenses each week and make some decisions.

Both Paul and Robyn get paid on the Wednesday of each week.

At present, they only have one car, which Robyn uses. Paul catches public transport to and from work every day.

They would like to buy a second car next year for Paul to use and want to make sure that they can afford to not only buy, but also run the car.

They have asked you to help set up a budget for the twelve months from Jan to Dec 2017.

Their expenses for each month are as follows:

·  Entertainment               $50 per week

·  Transport                       $30 per week

·  Lunches                          $35 per week

·  Clothes                          $60 per calendar month

·  Kindergarten fees          $800(paid in equal installments on Jan, Feb and March)

·  Food                              $270 per week

·  Rent                               $750 per month

·  Petrol                            $40 per week

·  Car maintenance           $250 in April and November each year

·  Car Insurance                $750 payable in June each year

·  Car registration              $800 payable in August each year

·  Phone (mobiles and fixed, Foxtel)    $250 per month

·  Christmas presents         $30 per month

·  Savings target               $75 per month

·  Birthday presents (for the immediate and extended family) Putting aside $ 80 per month

·  Baby sitter                     $15 per week

Questions

1.              Will Paul and Anne have enough money to meet all their on-going expenses? How much money will they have remaining (if any) to put towards their new car?

2.              What advice will you be giving them to reduce their expenditures?

As you can see, this course is so practical and interesting, because it shows you how to keep day-to-day account, and allows you to better understand how important it is.
