As the Internet improves connectivity throughout the globe every day, it seems the world holds an endless amount of fresh music and movies. As a result of this, pop singers and actors have become popular role models among young people nowadays, compared with historical celebrities.
Young people are driven away from historical people by several factors. Mass media is the great contributor leading to this. For commercial purposes, most media would like to spotlight the privacy of international pop and movie stars to attract the attention from the general public, especially the younger ones. Rather, schools are not well-known for teaching students history and getting them to remember historical figures. In most cases, they make this course so boring.
Although students often complain that history class is unintreseting, teachers can use several strategies to make them emotionally invested in knowing historical figures. First, combining audio and visual materials is an excellent way and these include films, books, artwork, documents and maps. Showing a film and later introducing maps, census records and correspondence gives students something tangible they can hold. Secondly, engaging students by taking on local historical field trips is another effective approach. A greater awareness of historical figures in locations that students are familiar with can be extremely interesting to them and can further pique their curiosity about this person. The involvement of students also plays a vital role in this. They are entitled to connect themselves with a personal story and to allow themselves to become part of that story and tell that story. By these ways, they get better understanding of historical celebrities.
In conclusion, I think that increasing the interesting in historical figures would depend on using movies to encourage students’ awareness and on hosting fieldtrips to attract their attention.
