Australians share over two hundred and fifty linguistic and cultural backgrounds. Most non-indigenous Australians have arrived in this country in the last two hundred years or so and a third of Australians population today have arrived in the past fifty years. Interpreters have provided interpreting services between the government agencies and institutions and newly arrived migrants as far back as early 1800s in courts, ports of arrival, and other public services.
