After years in the wilderness, the term “localfood system” re-enters public consciousness with its supporters and advocates promoting its substantial benefits. They claim that compared with importing overseas foods, countries are encouraged to produce food for local population as with this way fresher, more nutritious and healthier food can be provided. As one of them, I believe that produce food locally promotes substantial benefits other than these.

Encouraging countries to produce foods fortheir population would have benefits for economic and environment. Firstly it would provide significant opportunities for growers and producers to innovate and value-added. In order to feed the soaring populations, most farmers will concentrate on boosting the agricultural productivity in their fields, while local producer will focus on foods researchers to provide the diversity of foods. Secondly, it allows for the preservation and conservation of land for food supply activity and other agricultural uses to against urban encroachment. If agricultural lands are fully occupied with corps, both real estate developers and local governments will not create any opportunities to turn these areas into residential ones, successfully avoiding environmental problems such as airpollution, nose pollution and water pollution. Encouraging local food production could therefore improve local community through promoting the development of economy and improving natural environment.

On the other hand, it is undeniable that producing foods for populations has its own disadvantages. Unlike importingfoods form overseas, domestic food production cannot access to a wider variety of food types and may cause a breaking of the reliance on the seasonality of many foods particularly fruit and vegetables.

In conclusion, although importing foods from overseas may come with a wide range of food types without the restriction of changing seasons, trying to provide local residents with foods is an obligation to most countries world-wide.
