8.16Pearson Sydney – from Belinda

Speaking:

ReadAloud:

RepeatSentence:

DescribeImage:

RetellLecture:

1.     Dimensions

The number of variablesused to specify position. 如果near the equator就用one number: longitude,这是one dimensionon the surface就用two numbers: longitudelatitudelocate一个地方,这是two dimensionover the surfacethree numbers: longitude, latitude, altitude (three dimension)in the space4 numbers: longitude, latitude, altitude ,还有time (four dimension)。最后阐明只有带入四维才能解释空间是where does it happen andwhen does it happen

Napoleon III Paris Renovation

This lecture mainly talks about therenovation of Parisin 1890s. The renovation was a vastpublic program commissioned by Napoleon the third and directed by Haussmann.Napoleon the third instructed Haussmann to bring air and light to the centre ofParis and todrain the sewages.  And he also askedHaussmann to plant more trees, build roads and to make the city safer. Thereason for doing this was that the old Parishad many serious problems such as overcrowding, diseases and crimes.

3.     Lickingand Grooming (LG): rat experiments about low LG and high LG.

Some mother rats spend alot of time licking, grooming, and nursing their pups. Others seem to ignoretheir pups. Highly nurtured rat pups tend to grow up to be calm adults, whilerat pups who receive little nurturing tend to grow up to be anxious.

AnswerShort Questions:

Writing:

SummariseWritten Text:

(It’ll Never Fly: The City of London

原文:

Whowould have thought back in 1698, as they downed their espressos, that thelittle band of stockbrokers from Jonathan's Coffee House in Change Alley EC3would be the founder-members of what would become the world's mighty moneycapital?

Progresswas not entirely smooth. The South Sea Bubble burst in 1720 and the coffeehouse exchanges burned down in 1748. As late as Big Bang in 1986, when bowlerhats were finally hung up, you wouldn't have bet the farm on Londonsurpassing New York, Frankfurt and Tokyo as Mammon'sinternational nexus.

Yetthe 325,000 souls who operate in theUKcapital's financial hub have now overtaken their New York rivals in size of the funds managed(including offshore business); they hold 70% of the global secondary bondmarket and the City dominates foreign exchange trading. And its institutionspaid out billion in bonuses in December. The Square Mile has now spread botheastwards from EC3 to Canary Wharf and westwards into Mayfair, where many of the private-equity 'locusts' and their hedge-fund pals now hangout. For foreigners in finance, Londonis the place to be. It has no Sarbanes-Oxley and no euro to hold it back, yetthe fact that it still flies so high is against the odds.

London is one of the mostexpensive cities in the world to live in, transport systems groan and there'san ever-present threat of terrorist attack. But, for the time being, the dealsjust keep on getting bigger.

第四段提到伦敦的生活the most expensive in the world

答案:

London, used to be a small placewhere stockbrokers rest in a coffee house, has now overtaken New York to become the world’s largestglobal secondary bond market and foreign exchange trading centre, even withdrawbacks such as high life expenditure, overcrowded transport and threats fromterrorism.

2.     CompulsoryVoting

WriteEssay:

1.     Somepeople think laws can change human behaviour. Other people think laws havelittle impact on human behaviour. Discuss both views and give your opinion.

2.     有人认为newspapers are no longer necessary inthe modern society。

Reading:

Listening

SummariseSpoken Text:

1.     Receptor– eardrum

原文:

Underappropriate conditions, mind you. Sound receptors. You've got sound receptorsin your ear and they are beautiful.

We'renot going to talk about them at any length, but there's little flappy, theselittle spiky things going along in your ear and they can translate vibrationalenergy coming from your ear, hurting your eardrum, being translated into avibration into the fluid in your ear into a physical motion of these littlereceptors there into an electrical motion, into an electrical signal that goesinto your ear.

So,all of that, all of that's pretty impressive stuff. We're not going to talkabout the details of it, but I invite some of you who want to learn more aboutthis, particularly MIT students I think find receptors really quite remarkable kindsof devices.

答案:

Soundreceptors are the flappy, spiky things that translate the vibrational energy, through our eardrums, into the vibrations of the fluid in ears. The physicalmotion will turn into electric motions and electric signals in ears. At theend, instead of talking about details of it, MIT students are invited to have acloser view of receptors with the same quality of the ears.

HighlightIncorrect Words:

WriteFrom Dictation:

1.      Referencematerials are on hold on the library reference desk.

2.      Themain concepts of these events were not yet fully understood.

3.      Wesupport the research on tropical dynamics and forecasting.
