1. Stand with your feet shoulder width apart
2. Lower your body until your bottom touches (or comes close to touching) your heels
3.Rest your armpits on your knees for better balance. (Make sure your heels are on the floor!)
Studies show that there are a number of tendons in the ankle area that our squatting friends exercise while doing the squat. It also requires hip and knee flexibility that many of us seem to lack due to a shortage of practise. Most muscles from the waist down are worked as you squat. Fortunately, there are many benefits! Squatting can also lead to strengthened muscles, and better flexibility and balance.
The “Asian Squat” allows many people to multi-task and complete tasks that require particular exertion. For example, Koreans make Kimchi (a delicious spicy pickled cabbage) for hours on end, simply by squatting.
Other activities that are useful include playing games, watching sport and television and waiting for public transport. Or, simply having a conversation! When planting and growing, picking up things, cleaning, cooking and washing, the “Asian Squat” is suitable for all circumstances.
So we did a test – 100% of the Asians could squat with feet on the ground (P<0.000063) while only 13.5% of North Americans could (p<0.0000043). And of the 13.5%, 9% had part ASIAN ancestry in them. The remaining one was a Yoga Freak.
(East Asians are relatively short, so they have a different equilibrium point than many Westerners.)
I believe specifically it is related to the thigh to shin length ratio. Being Asian, when I squat my butt rests squarely on my heels--easily touching -- while my feet are flat to the ground. My shins are nearly exactly the same length as my thighs. I have long legs in comparison to my torso, so I don't think that is a factor. My caucasian friends tend to have longer thighs as compared to their shins, forcing them to maintain 3-4 inches of distance between their heels and their butt. This either causes them to come up on the balls of their feet, to maintain balance or fall backwards.
(Asian people have more flexible heels than Westerners)
Ashley Lippe:
I am a 31 year old American White woman and I can squat and kneel easily even when I was pregnant. I think it is a muscular development issue and has nothing to do with ethnicity. If you grow up squatting and kneeling frequently or practice doing so in yoga or even cross fit as an adult you'll develop the flexibility and strength to do it comfortably for long periods of time.
Quora 网友 David A. LaSpina:
With enough practice, many white folks can do it just fine. It didn’t take me long in Japan before I learned how to balance myself into a squat and now I can do it quite easily, and it is comfortable. It is hard for many foreigners because they are not used to it and the muscles needed are weak, but with practice they can often do it too.
