俚语是一种在非正式场合下使用的口语体语言。俚语的使用往往可以表示生动新颖的形象或不同常规的事物。虽然俚语与标准语存在差距,却也不会被看作是粗俗不堪,难以接受的语言。在20世纪后期,有些俚语甚至还出现在了正式场合。

澳洲作为一个独特的南半球国家,有着属于她自己的文化,其俚语的发展也与英美有所差别。澳洲俚语源于早期英国殖民者、流放犯和移民等。澳大利亚语言学家S. J. Baker在其论著《澳大利亚语言》中全面介绍了澳洲俚语的历史演变,并将其形容为用语夸张、比喻生动、委婉风趣的语言。

Belt up

——Be quite,闭嘴

Spiffy

——Great-looking.好看

Earbashing

——Constant chatter/talking.唠叨,喋喋不休

——Going very fast whatever they're doing.效率高

Full as a goog

——Drunk or eaten to the excess.狂吃海喝,吃撑了

例:That was a great meal. I am full as a goog.这餐太棒了,我都吃撑了。


Crack a tinnie

——Open a can of cold beer打开一罐冰啤酒

例:Come over to my place and we'll crack a tinnie.来我这儿吧,我们打算喝啤酒。


Go and have a cuppa
