For most Chinese, Spring festival is definitely the most important holiday in our culture. It is held at a different time each year as it follows the lunar calendar. Usually, it’s in January or February. There are a number of important customs that we have during this time of year. One thing that we do is let off fire-crackers. This happens a lot over the 15-day period, and unfortunately, contributes to the pollution problem – but it’s something we’ve been doing for a long time. Another important element of Spring festival is the making and eating of dumplings. Dumplings at Spring festival, are nearly always made and eaten at home. And wrapping the dumplings together as a family is as important as eating them. But without doubt, the most important part of Spring festival is going home. Nowadays, many people work and study in a city away from their hometown but at Spring festival, the vast majority of people go home. This means a huge amount of people traveling at the same time, but it’s worth it. People have the chance to catch up with family and relatives which is an important part of Chinese culture.
