IT was the image that defined one of the most shocking days in Sydney’s history.

But it didn’t depict the terrified faces of hostages, the black Islamic flag hanging from the Lindt Cafe window, or the gunman who held them captive for more than 16 long hours.

Instead, it was the picture of a vast sea of flowers left by thousands of people in the wake of the Sydney siege that become a symbol of solidarity and hope.

The senseless deaths of Katrina Dawson and Tori Johnson triggered an outpouring of emotion from complete strangers determined to prove there was still light in a world that suddenly seemed darker.

As news came that the mother of three and cafe manager had died in the siege, people flooded Martin Place to leave colourful floral tributes and notes of defiance and condolence on the pavement.

The site soon transformed into a stunning makeshift memorial.

Sydneysiders continued to empty florists in the days that followed as pictures of them paying their respects at Martin Place were beamed around the world.

By the weekend, the tributes had grown to two separate sites, one directly outside the Lindt Cafe and another, across Elizabeth Street.

Thomas Zinn, Mr Johnson’s partner, said that there was “no more beautiful thing than (Tori) could have imagined”.

“When I was down there yesterday, I could smell the flowers through Sydney, and I think it’s just amazing that he has been able to make our city smell like flowers,” Mr Zinn told reporters in the days after the siege, which happened a year ago today.

City officials have spent 12 months conjuring a fitting — and lasting — marker of the day when global terrorism came to Sydney. In the end, they picked the flowers.

As many as 400 floral cubes have been inset in a starburst pattern in Martin Place’s granite pavement, lighting up in remembrance of that terrible day.

NSW Premier Mike Baird said the memorial would also serve as a reminder of Sydney’s instinctive reaction to the horror.

“A year ago, in the face of evil, we saw a remarkable outpouring of love and compassion as flowers flooded Martin Place,” he said.

“In the face of division, we saw unity. In response to hate, we saw an overflow of peace and love.

“We tragically lost Katrina and Tori. But we did not, and will not, lose the values that set us apart.”

A twilight ceremony will be held on Tuesday to mark the one-year anniversary of the siege.

“This is an important opportunity to mark one year since the traumatic events of the Martin Place siege,” Mr Baird said.

“It will be an understated public ceremony to remember victims and survivors, and to recognise the response and resilience of a community that refused, and refuses yet, to be divided by those who wish to cause harm,” he said.

The Lindt Cafe building will be lit up for five nights with projections of the floral tribute and the thousands of messages left at the site in the aftermath.
