George W. Bush, who served two terms before President Barack Obama was elected in 2008, "does not plan to participate in or comment on" this year's race, according to his aide. A spokesman for Bush's father, George H.W. Bush, said the elder former president is "retired from politics." He left office in 1993 after losing his re-election bid to Bill Clinton. The elder Bush endorsed Clinton's 1996 Republican opponent Bob Dole, and naturally supported his son's successful campaigns in 2000 against Al Gore and in 2004 against John Kerry. In 2008, both George H.W. Bush and George W. Bush supported John McCain when he lost to President Barack Obama. They also backed Mitt Romney in 2012 as Obama won a second term. Media Monitors Report Decline in Global Press Freedom When journalists and media rights activists gather in Helsinki to mark World Press Freedom day Tuesday, there will be a notable absence: Journalist Khadija Ismayilova, recipient of this year’s UNESCO/Guillermo Cano World Press Freedom Prize, is currently serving a 7.5-year sentence in Azerbaijan for her work exposing government corruption. The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) says some 200 journalists like Khadija are currently jailed across the world. And prison isn’t the only way that governments co-opt or suppress the media. Thai journalist Pravit Rojanaphruk was also invited to Helsinki, but the ruling military junta has banned him from leaving the country – a small price to be paid, he recently wrote, “as journalists elsewhere face long-term detention or even assassination. Global press freedom has fallen to its lowest point in more than a decade, notes Freedom House in its latest annual report, which scores 199 countries and territories, democracies and autocracies. “Only 13 percent of the world’s population enjoys a free press—that is, where coverage of political news is robust, the safety of journalists is guaranteed, state intrusion in media affairs is minimal, and the press is not subject to onerous legal or economic pressures,” the report finds. (03)9042 1986 or 0452 236 868 W: www.ausielts.com.auE: [email protected]P: (03) 9042 1986 or 0423953887A: 1212, 530 Little Collins Street, Melbourne, Vic 3000, Australia微信号: ausIELTS本文来自网络,由雅学妹妹编辑整理
