Parramatta will get a light rail project but its route and cost are still unknown

THE Baird government will “definitely” build a light rail network across Parramatta in Sydney’s West, despite not yet knowing how much it will cost or what route it might take.

A day after handing down its state budget, the government was on Wednesday spruiking its transport projects in Sydney.

The budget set aside $400 million toward its Western Sydney light rail plan but would go no further than committing to a feasibility study for the project.

It canvassed 10 possible options for routes going out of Parramatta, ranging from one that goes to Castle Hill to one going all the way to Sydney’s CBD.

Transport Minister Gladys Berejiklian said the feasibility study would help hash out the details of the project but that the decision to build it had already been made.

“It definitely will happen,” she said in Sydney.

“We know there’s demand and we know that there’s a growing population.”

The study would also determine the project’s cost, the minister said.

“The exact cost will be determined by the route we choose and also the extent of engineering that has to go into it,” she said.

Ms Berejiklian was in Kellyville, in Sydney’s northwest, with Premier Mike Baird and Treasurer Andrew Constance to officially start work on the $8.3 billion North West Rail Link project, which will include sky-trains.

Mr. Baird helped turn the sod at the site where the Kellyville station will be built.

“Everybody loves to be here for a sod turning,” the premier joked.

“If anyone’s got a sod, I’m there to turn it.”
