Dimension is a variable to explain how many points/parameters are required to describe a position. 

If describe a position on equator, then just need one parameter, that is longitude.

If we describe a position on earth, then we need two parameters, which are longitude and latitude.

If we want to describe a position which is above the earth, we need altitude, as the third dimension.

Taking time into consideration, we have the fourth dimension.
