Scientists predict that cars will be driven by computers in the near future. What are the reasons and would it be a positive or negative development?

Modern science is making progressive moves every day. It is believed that soon cars will be computerised completely due to the fast-paced technological advancement, and in my opinion, this would be an extremely positive development.

Key Vocabulary

  • progressive:

adj.

e.g.: The hospital famously spearheaded progressive treatment for children with mental health issues in the late 19th century.

  • computerised:

adj.

e.g.: The new computerised screening device flags up where candidates get the same scores in written answers.

  • fast-paced:

adj.

e.g.: In today’s fast-paced business culture, the ‘right’ time often means immediate access to the latest information.

The prolific speed of contemporary science has built a swift lifestyle resulting in an inherent need for increased efficiency in mankind. This, I feel, is the key reason behind the potential development of cars being driven by computers. People do not want to spend unfruitful time on just driving to different places when they could devote their time on important matters instead to allow them to increase their efficiency. For example, a person driving to work would lose time that he could utilise on making ends meet which could be avoided if he was driven by a computer permitting him more time to focus on getting work done.

Key Vocabulary

  • prolific:

adj.

e.g.: As the world’s most prolific smartphone maker, Samsung is very much invested in cellular.

  • swift:
    swift: adj.

  • unfruitful:

adj.

  • devote time on:

e.g.: He thinks we should not devote any more time on this issue.

  • make ends meet:

e.g.: She says the increase just isn’t enough for people trying to make ends meet.

Furthermore, the greatest advantage of computer driven cars would be the increase in road safety as these cars would minimise road accidents stemming from human errors. As driving requires personal judgement, many road accidents occur due to human mistakes, such as over speedingrash driving, etc. However, the new technology would be based on computer systems built on specific algorithms that follow traffic rules which would further result in safer traffic conditions. For instance, even if a person indulges in alcohol, reckless driving would not be possible if a computer-driver is behind the wheels.

Key Vocabulary

  • stem from:

e.g.: These warnings stem from anti-government demonstrations, as well as reports of kidnappings and other terrorist activity.

  • over speeding:

e.g.: Magnetic rotor identification prevents the rotor from over speeding.

  • rash driving:

  • algorithms

 ['ælgərɪð(ə)mz],算法

e.g.: The algorithms look for interesting patterns in the data to determine what to write about.

  • indulge in:

e.g.:  They seem to care little about others, shut down communication and indulge in their own worlds.

  • reckless:

adj.

e.g.: His reckless driving accounted for the accident.

In conclusion, the main cause for computerised cars is the integral need for efficiency that arises from today’s hi-tech advancements. From my perspective, the era of automatic automobiles would set several benefits, including improved safety, in motion and would definitely be a positive movement in the scientific field.
