Graduate Structural Engineer

In Sydney, we will soon be supplying our latest Metropolis rolling stock and Communications Based Train Control (CBTC) signalling system for the new Sydney Metro and the latest evolution of our Citadis tram, the X05, will bring a new dimension Sydney’s public transport network.

Purpose of the Job 
The Undergraduate Signalling Engineer will be responsible for supporting the development and implementation of signalling solutions for railway projects carried out in Australia and New Zealand as guided or directed by the Project Manager or Engineering Manager.

The undergraduate engineer will be part of the Train control system team and will report to the train control system design leader.

The employee is a member of the TIS (Transport Information Solutions) department.


Responsibilities
Engineering Functions

  • Supporting the production of train control system designs based on typical design input documents, such as; Signalling Principles, Signalling Arrangement Plans, Interface Specifications, System Specifications, and Functional Specifications.

  • Develop the hardware and software related to the train control system and its sub system (front-end processor, server, HMI)

  • Supporting the management of the configuration and the change request processes for dedicated systems for delivery.

  • Supporting coordinating with the System Design team, Data Preparation team, Verification and Validation team and the project engineering manager in regard to the delivery of train control system.

  • Supporting tenders by providing information to the bid technical manager and tender team.

  • Contributing to improvements by proposing innovative features with added value for the final customer.

  • Participating in site testing and commissioning activities.

Safety Responsibilities
Ensure safety instructions are adhered to and report any inappropriate practices and incidents. Comply with Occupational Health & Safety Act in regard to self, tenants and customers.


Train track safety awareness
All staff who may be required to come into contact with rail activity, including design work, shall:

  • Be responsible for their actions where those actions can in any way affect or compromise railway safety;

  • Be aware of the railway safety requirements associated with their duties and responsibilities;

  • Take whatever action is possible to prevent the occurrence of unsafe conditions and / or incidents;

  • Report any railway safety problems / hazards of which they become aware to the Manager Safety.


Candidate Requirements

Educational Requirements 

2 years experience on an engineering related Bachelor degree course (Washington Accord recognised).

Desired Knowledge / Experience

  • Computer literacy and proficiency in the Microsoft Office suite of software packages and other packages required specific to engineering design.

  • Computer programming proficiencies in variety of languages including, but not limited to, C++, Java, ADA.

  • Proficiency in network and server architecture

  • Technical knowledge and experience.

  • Actively studying on an undergraduate degree course in a related engineering discipline.

  • Desirable student membership of appropriate professional organisation (e.g. EA, IRSE, IEEE, PMI etc.).

  • Basic knowledge of ISO 9001 Quality Systems.

  • Current Drivers Licence.

Policies And Procedures Responsibilities

  • Ensure compliance with all Alstom EH&S policies, procedures and relevant legislative requirements.

  • Ensure compliance with Alstom Fitness for Work Policy, including undertaking your own Drug and Alcohol responsibility of care and submitting to random testing as required.

  • Ensure compliance with all relevant Rail Safety legislation.

  • Ensure compliance with all Alstom HR policies and procedures and legislation including Equal Employment Opportunity and Harassment Legislation.

  • Ensure compliance with all IT policies and procedures in particular with regards to: appropriate access and use of systems/software, security of data and policies pertaining to viewing/ copying/ downloading of inappropriate, offensive or sexually explicit material.

  • Ensure adherence to the principles contained in the PPIR Professional Performance protocol including continued completion of performance agreements and performance reviews.
