Some people say that we do not need printed newspaper any more. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this opinion?
There are some people who claim that newspapers in print are of no use of us any longer due to the availability of news on the Internet. I disagree with this point of view, and believe that we still need printed newspapers these days.
On the one hand, some may argue that do not need printed newspapers anymore as they are available online. News on global issues are virtually accessible from any computer or other devices such as mobile phones that have an Internet connection. For instance, The Age newspaper in Melbourne reports the same events that are available in print as well as on their official website, which negates the need of purchasing a printed copy at a news agency. For this reason, it is understandable that people opine that printed newspapers are no longer needed.
On the other hand, there will still be a necessity for printed newspapers as not everybody prefers to read the news online or on television. The older generation, particularly those who are not as technologically savvy as those who are younger tend to prefer reading published news in print rather than on the web. For example, the demographic of older people like our grandparents who are used to newspapers in print their whole lives would less likely change their habits to read the news online as some of them may not know how to do so. Thus, there will always be a need for printed newspapers.
Whilst digital news will certainly thrive and dwindle the need for printed media, I disagree that the demand for printed newspapers will disappear. Aside from people of older generations who prefer to read physical copies of newspapers, there are also those in rural areas who have limited Internet access. As these people can only depend on printed newspapers, they will therefore still be needed for decades to come.
In conclusion, I believe from the points above that although the news in printed form may arguably become obsolete due to the Internet, a portion of people still prefer printed newspapers and will need them if they have limited Internet access.
