Q: It is better for students to live away from home while studying at university than living at home with parents. Do you agree or disagree?

One of the first decisions young adults have to make upon the completion of high school is the decision to live at home or away from home during the course of their tertiary studies. Personally, I agree that there are more benefits to be gained by living away from home than living with parents.

Living away from home allows university students to be independent and develop a myriad of skills that would otherwise not have been cultivated. Moving out and getting settled into a brand new home means those young people are able to keep cruising directly into the real world once graduation rolls around. By living away from parents, they might have to check out real estate information around their colleges, find the best deal and get ready to start building their life for during and after college. Moreover, students may, for the first time, take care of installing amenities such as cable or the internet, and keep up with all the bills paying. These skills are useful and will in the long-run aid them to step into adulthood.

Another advantage is that, compared to living at home, residing in on-campus accommodations will give young adults the opportunity to build in community. Dorms are a fabulous way to meet people and cement friendships. There is usually always someone with whom to hang out or grab lunch. And the relationships students establish will inform their collegiate experience as much as the time spent in the classroom or doing assignments. This can lead to strengthened connections with their friends, as whom may become a more primary source of encouragement and support.

In conclusion, it seems to me that living away from home affords various advantages, since tertiary students can not only have the opportunity to get a deeper taste of independence and adulthood, but also strengthen peer relationships.
