各位大朋友，小朋友，大家好！！

考试基本恢复，备考之路应当如何走？

相信大家在刷FIB的时候，遇到了很多近似词，以至于我们无法分辨，以为做对了实际错的一塌糊涂。

今天我们邀请到PTE大西瓜Mary老师来传授FIB里近似词的区分方法。

1. Progress VS Process

Progress /ˈprəʊ.ɡres/ 进步，进展

Progress 这个词在拖拽式的FIB 091425. David Lynch中出现过， 例句：David’s career in education began as a primary school teacher in Queensland in the early 1980’s and progressed to four principal positions before entering higher education.

大卫的教育事业从20世纪80年代初期在昆士兰当小学老师开始，后来升职并担任过4次校长职位，此后他进入高等教育领域。这里的progress 意为进步。

Process  /ˈprəʊ.ses/ 过程，步骤；变化过程， 进程；制作方法，加工方法

Process 这个词在拖拽式的FIB 091439. Entrepreneurs 中出现过：An entrepreneur visualizes needs and takes the necessary actions to initiate the process by which they will be met. 一位企业家将需求可视化，并采取步骤来满足这些需求。这里的process 是步骤的意思。

2. Extend VS Extent

Extend /ɪkˈstend/ （动词）扩大，扩展，使增加长度；延长，使延期；伸出，展开；伸展，延续；提供，给予；包括，影响到；使才尽其用

Extend 的形容词形式在拖拽式 FIB 091491. No Parents 出现过：

For many first-year students, the University may be their first experience living away from home for an extended period of time.

对于很多大一学生来说，大学可能是他们对于第一次长期不在家住的经历。

这里的extended 是延长的，长的

Extent /ɪkˈstent/（名词） 面积，范围，长度，数量

一些和extent相关的搭配：

The extent to which （某事可能发生的）程度

To the extent of 到达……的程度，到……的地步

To the extent that 到……程度， 到……的地步; 以至于

To the same extent 在同样的程度上，同样，一样

To some extent 在某种程度上

To such an extent 到如此地步

To what extent? 在多大程度上

Extent 这个词在拖拽式FIB 091445. Reality 出现过：

To one extent or another, this view of reality is one many of us hold, if only implicitly. 在某种程度上，大多数人都持这种对现实的看法，即使只是隐含地。这里的extent是程度的意思。 

3. Rise VS Raise

Rise /raɪz/ （不及物动词）上升，升高，升起；起床；河流发源；（群众）反抗，起义；（名词）增加，上涨，地位升高；小山丘

相关的固定搭配： on the rise 在上升，在增长

在091433 The World’s Language: English 中，Thanks in part to the rise of über-languages, most importantly English, the remaining languages are now dying at the rate of about one a fortnight.

部分由于über-语言的兴起，最重要的是英文，其他语言现正以两周一种（语言）的速度消亡。

这里的rise 是兴起，兴盛的意思。

Raise  /reɪz/ （及物动词）举起，抬起；增加，提高；引起，导致；养育， 喂养，种植；解禁，与……通话；加薪

在FIB 092079 Film 中， raise这个词被挖空了：A producer is just like an entrepreneur, we raise money to make films.

制片人就像创业人士一样， 我们筹集资金来做电影。这里的raise money 是筹集资金的意思。

4. Economic VS Economical

Economic  英：/iː.kəˈnɒm.ɪk/   /ek.əˈnɒm.ɪk/ 美： /iː.kəˈnɑː.mɪk/ /ek.əˈnɑː.mɪk/    （形容词）经济的；经济上的；产生经济效益的；有利可图的；能赚钱的

在091517 Liquidity （流动资金）中提到了这个单词：

A slackening of economic activity or a drop in asset prices can leave households, businesses and financial institutions in trouble if their balance sheets are not liquid enough (the second concept) or if they cannot find a buyer for assets.

经济活动放缓或资产价格下跌会让家庭，商业和金融机构陷入困境，如果他们的资产负债流动性不够（第二个概念），或者他们找不到资产购买者。

Slacken 放缓，放慢，放松 

在这里economic 是经济的

Economical （形容词）（英式） /ˌiː.kəˈnɒm.ɪ.kəl/ /ek.əˈnɒm.ɪ.kəl/ （美式）  /ˌiː.kəˈnɑː.mɪ.kəl/ /ek.əˈnɑː.mɪ.kəl/  经济的，省钱的，节约的

例句：What's the most economical way of heating this building?  什么才是最省钱的给这栋楼供暖的方法？

5. Considerate VS Considerable

Considerate  /kənˈsɪd.ər.ət/ （形容词）体贴的，周到的，关心的

BBC 的一则新闻标题中用到了considerate 这个单词：Coronavirus: Supermarkets ask shoppers to be 'considerate' and stop stockpiling

新冠病毒：超市呼吁消费者“体贴（他人）”并停止囤货

In a joint letter, UK retailers have reminded customers to be considerate in their shopping, so that others are not left without much-needed items.

在一封联合函中，英国零售商提醒消费者在购物中体贴关心他人，这样别人就不会缺少急需的物品。

Considerable /kənˈsɪd.ər.ə.bəl/ 相当大的，相当多的，非常可观的， 相当重要的

在FIB 092071 History Books 中有这么一句：the history curriculum was the

subject of considerable public and media interest.

历史课是个引起公众和媒体极大关注的课题。Considerable 在这里是“相当大的”的意思。

6. Historic VS Historical

Historic  /hɪˈstɒr.ɪk/ 有历史意义的，历史上的

Historic 形容的是历史上较为重要的事件，Grammarly 上面有这么一个例子：

The effects of the historic Battle of Hastings can still be seen in the English language.

历史意义重大的黑斯廷斯之战的影响仍存在于英文当中。这里的historic 就是有历史意义的意思。

Historical /hɪˈstɒr.ɪ.kəl/  过去的，和历史有关的

We used a historical map to learn about the history of our town. 我们用一张旧地图来学习我们小镇的地方。Historical 是过去的

这两句话当中的historical 和historic 不能互换。

在 FIB 092042 Australian Overseas Departures 当中也提到了historical 一词：The models were estimated using historical time series data from 1973 to 1998. 这些模型是根据1973-1988 年间的时间序列数据估计的。这里的historic 也是过去的意思。

7. Effect VS Affect

Affect  /əˈfekt/ （不及物动词）影响，侵袭，感染，打动；（及物动词）假装

在FIB 091306 Two Types of Genes 中提到了affect 这个词：

whereas mutations in “housekeeping” genes tend to affect the health and reproductive success of the post-embryonic animal.

但是在“家务管理”基因上的突变倾向于影响胚后期动物的健康及成功繁衍。

这里的affect 是影响的意思

Effect  /ɪˈfekt/ （名词）效果，结果，生效 （动词）实现

Effects 有特效的意思：在FIB 091481. Musicals 中也提到了effects ：Many modern musicals are known for their spectacular sets, lighting and other effects. 很多现代音乐剧都以其壮观的布景，灯光及其他特效著称。

在FIB 091604 Gun Violence 中也提到了effect 这个单词：Researchers found there is a substantial cause and effect relationship between exposure and perpetration of violence. 研究人员发现在暴露于暴力中和犯罪之间大体上有因果关系。Cause and effect 是因果关系的意思，而这里的effect就是结果，后果的意思。
