The SMH broke the story “China the unspoken threat at centre of new defence strategy” (1July2020) “The updated plan throws open the way to everything except nuclear weapons. The new policy accepts that high-intensity war in our region is more likely than was envisaged by the defence white paper of 2016. The new plan instead seeks urgently to arm Australia with much more lethal weapons. Indeed, the Morrison government s strategy commits Australia to acquiring weapons systems that it long resisted for fear of seeming too aggressive. Australia is to buy ship killing missiles and shift focus to Indo Pacific. But now the question is not whether it s too offensive but whether it provides defence enough”.
National President of Chinese Community Council of Australia Dr Anthony Pun wrote a response, published in the SMH:
"It is sad to hear the sound of distant war drums and our country preparing for war against an ideological "enemy" who has no nukes or missiles pointing at us. The US military industrial complex benefits from this unnecessary arm race. I thought post covid-19 recovery economic has more priority than war spending and pray tell, where do get massive $$ expensive armaments? Better for Australia to spend $$ developing into a South Pacific "hegemon" than wasting money up north.
Chinese Australians are a peace loving people who have neither the need or desire to go to war with any of our neighbours and we would do all we can to convince our Australian government the folly of war, the sufferings it will bring to peoples on both sides.
There are impossible logistics for national security, public safety and dampening racists tirades when 1.2 million Chinese Australians who have to confront a war with the land of their ancestors. Of course, as loyal Australians, we would take up arms if we were attacked however, to ferry Chinese Australians to fight an overseas war with China is unthinkable and an abominable nightmare.
Hello Prime Minister, are you kidding us ? Or you must have been influenced so badly by ASPI and Peter Jennings who was talking on ABC last night (01/07/2020) implying that China is such a bad boy that we must be prepared to go to war to fight them, hence your are spending $270 billions tax payer hard earned dollars for it. Don t you think by the time all the weapons you wish to purchase are ready, the war may be over? How are you going to explain to our Australian people in spending such big sum while people are crying for better healthcare, education, social welfare and jobs, jobs and jobs.
However, we are peace makers. We have solutions to avoid war with China. We have done it before last 47 years since we established full diplomatic relation in 1972 to keep Australia and China in peace. Both the peoples of Australia and China have benefited a lot from such a productive, constructive win-win relationship. We have all the diplomatic skill and talents to get both sides to sit down again and talk about all the misinformation and misunderstanding between China and Australia. Chinese culture is a peaceful culture. History shows that she only defended herself against invasions from many fronts in the past. Modern China does not welcome any war. She has openly stated in her foreign policy. Can Australia openly state the same? Is it worth it to be the gun powder for USA?
The last six months have been a horrible xenophobic experience and now the nightmare for Chinese Australians. Hence, we would like to petition the PM Morrison to put our nation’s peaceful interest first and calm the fear and anxiety of 1.2 million Chinese Australians down about "war with China" war mongering talk? And we believe great majority of Australian people are on our sides: peace not war!!!
