The outbreak of coronavirus COVID-19 is a global health issue which requires a global response.

Australia stands together with China in seeking a swift resolution and the continued health of safety of our people.

Austrade offices in China remain open and our staff are working closely with Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade to monitor the situation and provide information on the impact of the outbreak.

Austrade’s staff in China and their safety and security is our highest priority at this time. In accordance with the Chinese government’s request, our staff in Shanghai, Guangzhou, Chengdu, Beijing, Shenyang, Shenzhen, Wuhan and Hong Kong remain at home managing work requirements from there.Chinese and Australian companies that need to contact us can do so via telephone, email and social media.

While it is difficult to make accurate assessments, the disruption to trade and investment, and to the education and tourism sectors is significant.

Austrade and the Australian Government are in regular contact with industry and businesses impacted by the coronavirus outbreak, seeking to find solutions to help business make a full and fast recovery when travel restrictions are lifted, and explore other opportunities in the interim.

We are also working with our partners, industry and marketing bodies, the education and tourism sectors, as well as state and territory governments to ensure businesses have access to relevant information that will assist them with decision-making and maintaining business continuity.

Australian businesses are advised to maintain close contact with their local Austrade office and Tradestart representative for up-to-date information.

China is Australia’s largest two-way trading partner with over AUD $ 200 billion trade in goods and services each year. China is also our largest source market for international tourists and students. China and Australia have strong and growing people to people links across business and all facets of society.

We value our relationship with China. The Chinese community in Australia have made a significant and valued contribution to Australia’s strong and unique multicultural society and our economic prosperity.

We know that the current epidemic will eventually be overcome. We think of our friends and colleagues impacted by the outbreak.

Our strength to recover will be derived from continuing collaboration between Australia and China and we look forward to even stronger development opportunities.

Businesses are encouraged to subscribe to the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade Smartraveller website (www.smartraveller.gov.au) to receive updates to the travel advice via email or text message.
