Museum Education Manager


About the business 

Established 1985, in the heart of Melbourne's Chinatown, the Museum of Chinese Australian History's ("Chinese Museum") mission is to preserve and present Chinese culture and Australian history in order to recognize and celebrate the identity of Chinese Australians.


The Museum's visitation is made up of school children (over 25,000 per year), interstate and international tourists, local visitors and the Chinese community.


Over five floors in a beautiful heritage building, the Museum showcases the heritage and culture of Australia's Chinese community.  Its activities include exhibitions about Chinese Australian history, Chinese culture, contemporary and traditional arts and cultural events. 


About the role 

The Museum's education program offerings include school education programs, guided tours, workshops, lectures and the Travelling Museum outreach program. The Education Manager is responsible for ensuring that all programs are of a high standard, strategically focussed and designed with the needs of audiences in mind, particularly with regards to the Victorian Curriculum. The Education Manager is, from time to time, required to take direct responsibility for the implementation and delivery of programs.


The Education Manager is responsible for administration and training of the education team, including financial management, strategic planning, policy development, reporting, as well as supervision, development and performance management of casual staff.


The Education Manager is to supervise the Booking Officer, who will assist in the management of all group bookings - both education and other audience groups with specific needs and interests.


The position has primary accountability for helping to achieve the Museum's mission and its annual school visitation targets.

The secondary role is to work with the Bookings Officer to assist the curator with the management of group bookings for other sectors of the community.


Role Specifics

The role is responsible for the development, overseeing and implementation of an annual education program in accordance with the Museum's strategic objectives:


  • Ensure that programs are based on sound museum education and engagement principles, meet the needs and interests of diverse and targeted audiences, express the Museum's values and mission, and are aligned with the Victorian Curriculum.

  • Ensure that the annual offerings are reviewed and refreshed annually to inspire existing and new school customers to visit the Museum.

  • Ensure the marketing of the annual program is promoted at the optimum time of year.

  • Support the Curator in the design and maintenance of exhibitions for excellent educational experiences.

  • Identify and pursue opportunities for the development of tailored educational programs for specific audiences and niche markets, including students, teachers, community groups, businesses and professional bodies.

  • Identify and pursue appropriate grant opportunities.

  • Evaluate programs to measure participant satisfaction.

  • Manage the Education Department team of casuals including the Education Bookings Officer and up to 20 casual Visitor Services Officers (Schools) to ensure effective delivery of the education program.


You will join a small and committed management team who are passionate about inspiring cross-cultural connectedness and understanding.


This is a part-time position, 3 days per week including a Thursday to participate in team meetings.


Skills and experience 

The successful applicant is to have:

  • sound knowledge of education standards and practices and the the Victorian curriculum,

  • at least two years' experience in the education sector in developing fulfilling educational experiences for school students.

  • skills to develop marketing and execute plans for the promotion of our programs to schools.

  • the ability to identify and establish key partnership and alliances with program delivery partners.

  • the ability to identify funding opportunities through grants or sponsors and be able to fulfil sponsor obligations or complete grant acquittals.
