Online shopping, which allows people to shop as long as they are connected to the internet, has become popular in the modern society and is expected to replace conventional shopping someday. Even though this is a positive development for convenience, I also believe that it can bring negative impacts on the environment and local employment rate.

Online shopping brings convenience to people. Shopping via the internet sounds particularly attractive to those who can hardly go to the mall for various reasons. For example, an international business man may often have to travel abroad for meetings and do not have much time on shopping around. In this case,shopping online, rather than conventional shopping, may be a better option for him when he has to make a purchase.

On the other hand, online shopping can be harmful to the environment. After an order is made, the item has to be delivered to the customer. Packaging is therefore required to reduce the risk of the item being damaged during delivery. Hence, more cartons or plastic materials, which can cause deforestation or soil pollution, will be used in the process of this kind of shopping, as compared to conventionalshopping where one plastic bag solves everything.

Equally important, local employment rate will be decreased if shopping in store is replaced by online shopping. When most people prefer to make a purchase via the internet rather than going to the mall, shopping malls do not need that many staff any longer because there are fewer customers to look after. As a result,more sales people become unemployed and the unemployment rate is thereby increased.

To summarize, online shopping replacing conventional shopping brings convenienceto various groups of people, but I think it can also negatively affect theenvironment and our employment situation.
