Nightmare on Wall Street:

US markets suffer

worst single-day decline in history

The Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped more than 1,500 points at one point on Monday.

It was the biggest intraday drop in history in points terms, or more than 6.0 per cent, before ending the day down 1,175.21 points or 4.6 per cent for its biggest one-day fall since August 2011.

The CBoe Volatility index, which tracks market volatility, closed at its highest since August 2015 and was displaying its biggest single-day jump of all time (84 per cent).

The Dow also set an intra-day record drop of 1,600 points and at one point fell 800 points in a span of just 10 minutes.

The previous record drop in points took place on August 24, 2015, when the Dow plunged 1,089 points during the trading session. The biggest decline in percentage terms was on May 6, 2010, when the "flash crash" resulted in more than a 9 percent fall. Monday’s drop erased all gains by the Dow this year, with the index down 1.51 percent since January 1.

“A lot of people who have been in this market for the past three or four years have never seen this before,” said Dennis Dick, a proprietary trader at Bright Trading LLC in Las Vegas, as quoted by Reuters. “The psychology of the market changed today. It’ll take a while to get that psychology back.”

Bulls are saying that strong US corporate earnings, including a boost from President Donald Trump’s tax cuts, will result in the continued growth of US stock indices. Bears are expecting a market decline, saying it is over-stretched because of rising bond yields as central banks withdraw their easy money policies of recent years.

Markets across the world followed the US decline. During Tuesday's trading, the Chinese Shanghai composite index plunged 3.35 percent, Japan’s Nikkei closed almost 5 percent down, key Western European indices fell almost 2 percent; Russia’s dollar-denominated RTS index was down 1.82 percent.

Elon Musk made history launching

a car into space.

Elon Musk

There was no shortage of media from Elon Musk’s SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket launch this week. A computer-rendered animation prepared us all for the spectacle, set to David Bowie’s “Life on Mars” as a kind of galactic music video. Everything was live-streamed as it happened.

But the real iconic image from the launch, the one most likely to stand the test of time, is of the cherry-red Tesla Roadster that Musk embedded in the capsule of the payload rocket. A gleaming convertible floating through (actual, real) space, its wheels not spinning at all, an astronaut-suited mannequin posed, unperturbed, with its arm hanging out the side. The Earth eventually looms in the background, incomprehensibly large, seen through the windshield.

It’s a staggering image — the first car ever in space, moving seven miles per second toward the asteroid belt — and so impressive that the video seems somehow unreal. It’s the greatest car ad of all time. What makes the image so compelling is in part its casualness, a feat carried off jauntily and successfully, with the added joke of the posed mannequin and a dashboard screen displaying “DON’T PANIC.”

The car is merely a stunt, but the flight is truly significant. The outcome will determine what lies ahead for the Falcon Heavy: if it fails or does not achieve orbit, then it will mean some amount of reworking on the part of SpaceX, and the timeline of the rocket’s next launches will be uncertain.

But if it succeeds, then the Falcon Heavy will become a commercially available rocket, ready for customers. The vehicle already has a few missions lined up: the next Falcon Heavy launch is meant to carry a communications satellite to orbit for Saudi Arabia, and a third flight will carry a bundle of research satellites, including the Planetary Society’s experimental LightSail spacecraft — meant to test out a sail that can propel vehicles through space using sunlight. That latter mission will also help certify the Falcon Heavy for use in future launches for the US Air Force.

Queensland heatwave:

How the state is beating the heat

Queenslanders are finding ways to keep their cool as the state's heatwave continues.

Queensland Ambulance Service's Lachlan Parker said the heat could affect people who are vulnerable.

"Often when the heat comes through it often sort of compounds a pre-existing medical condition and the risk patients for us are generally those elderly patients and also very young," he said.

"As best as we can tell over the last three days we've had 27 increased cases for heat-related illnesses — they range from people just being sort of general fatigue or headaches through to a little bit more serious."

Temperatures in Rockhampton hit 40C today, while further west in Central Queensland the town of Emerald reached 42C.

Bureau of Meteorology senior forecaster Rick Threlfall said temperatures were well above average for this time of year and were still building.

"It's pretty unusual, normally we get our hottest temperatures generally a bit earlier on in the year through January, so it is a bit unusual to be quite as hot as this in February.
