Farewell to a challenging 2020, embrace 2021 with a smile

The year 2020 has been an extremely challenging and traumatic one in Australia. The drought, the bushfire, the flood, and on top of all that, the worldwide pandemic of COVID-19. The current Australia China trade impasse seems to be COVID-19 related, yet, there may be more to that. There's a chance that this important bilateral relationship may have been compromised due to external influence, i.e., the US-China trade war or the US election and its uncertainty.

I have been actively following thenews covering major events around the globe, especially the Australia Chinabilateral relationship, which has never before been so turbulent.

The year started with good news andpromises of a flourished trade. However, COVID-19 had drastic impacts on theworld economy, and Australia and China got caught in the turmoil. No-oneescaped the wrath of the novel virus, and health-related problems weren't theonly concern as COVID-19 affected political relationships as well. As anAustralian citizen and Chairman of the Australian China Entrepreneurship Club,I have strived to work hard with like-minded entrepreneurs and help maintainand balance the four decades-long trade relationships between both countries.

My Journey from the Middle Kingdom (China 中国)to the Southern Hemisphere
In all of our efforts to keep the Australianentrepreneurs on track with the Chinese community, I came across manychallenges.

A Letter to Australia'sPrime Minister

As soon as my family returned toSydney in late January from my hometown, the COVID-19 locked-down city ofChangde in the Hunan Province, I started to call for the donation of PPEs onsocial media like LinkedIn and Wechat. On February 4th, I wrote to theAustralian Prime Minister, the Hon. Scott Morrison. I wrote as a responsiblecitizen. More than that, I wrote as someone who had just gone through theordeal, in person and with family, of being stuck the severest of lockdowns.

Expressing my concerns over thecoronavirus situation in China and wishing to help prevent it in Australia, Iproposed for a small but high-level Australian medical team to be sent to Chinato help fight the coronavirus. The idea was to make a generous donation towardsChina for when they badly needed medical PPEs and for the PM to publiclydemonstrate desirable SOPs on TV - washing hands, avoiding crowds, keepingsocial distance, etc.

I thank the Prime Minister for theprompt reply and updates he gave me on the Australian humanitarian assistance toChina, often publicly acknowledging on TV the Chinese community's earlyinvolvement and warning of the deadly virus that had helped protect theAustralian community as a whole.

Misinterpretation of MyEfforts

On February 24th, a Wuhan boundcargo flight was chartered to fly back the donations of PPEs from many localcompanies, organizations, individuals, and the local Chinese community to helpthe Chinese in Wuhan in their fight against the deadly virus. These donationsgreatly helped those badly in need. However, this gesture of goodwill was atleast misinterpreted (if not viciously targeted and slandered) by a fewjournalists from a number of mainstream Australian media and articles and TVreports. One after another, articles were published in late March, constantlybashing the Chinese and China-related businesses and entrepreneurs who madethose donations.

In view of this, I launched a timelypetition in Australia on April 1st calling for "No! Stop Race-targeting inAustralia Press". It was enthusiastically supported by over 13k signaturesin my LinkedIn community. I viewed the support as not just something formyself, but as a support for the cause and a reflection of Australians'attitude towards fake news in the mainstream media.

To reciprocate the kindness of localChinese Australians' early donation to China, a cargo flight full ofmuch-needed PPEs flew directly from the epicenter of Wuhan to Sydney on April8th, 2020. Plus, it was scheduled to fly back with much loved Tasmanian Salmon, beef, mutton, the Australian Milk Powder, etc. The next day, mostly donated, partly sold at 30% below cost to assist Wuhan. I thought this would be alandmark event and would be so significant for both China and Australia.

What a great opportunity to helpimprove the relationship, or at least pull a brake on the deterioration of thebilateral relationship! Why didn't Wuhan's first, landmark international flightafter the relaxation of its lockdown go elsewhere but Sydney?

May 1st 2020, My world was turned upside down

At 6pm on May 1st, I was viciouslyaccused in an 7news article that covered a story about the Australian Chinesetrade and the goodwill flight from Wuhan. The flight was slandered, and I wasdefamed in such an evil way that no words could describe my anger. Othersimilar articles were also published, bashing me to such an extent without anyinterview or evidence. I was certainly at my lowest point in life. Friendscould have easily cut ties with me, business deals that had been cooked up foryears could have been cancelled, and many Chinese videos and social media couldhave referenced the incidents and myself in a negative way. I know that I hadto do something and I had to do it fast.

A Friend in Need is aFriend Indeed
To defend myself and my family insuch a crisis, I had to clear my name and 20-year reputation. It took me nearly6 months of sleepless nights and a lot of support from my friends, andprofessional consultations to redeem my tarnished reputation.

As a firm believer in the Australianjustice system, I was fully prepared for the worst but hoped for the best. Imade some demands to a few mainstreammediaand most of my demands were considered and met, to my personal satisfaction and the satisfaction of myfamily, many news outlets met my demand, including, but not limited to 7news,Daily Mail Australia, and SBS. But all these may not be over yet. If you wantto stay tuned to my life, click here.

My Efforts To ImproveChina Australia Relationship

Mr. Huang Rengang Minister Counsellor -Economic and Commercial Affairs In The Chinese Embassy

I have given tooth and nail to keepthe balance between both nations despite the backlash I met in May 2020.Fortunately, I am supported by some of the local Chinese business communityleaders in Australia, like Mr. Yang Dongdong, chairman of Australia ChinaBusiness Summit, in my effort to improve trade relations between China andAustralia. He joined me to request a meeting with Mr. Huang Rengang, theMinister Counsellor for Economic and Commercial Affairs in the Chinese Embassy. To our pleasant surprise, Mr. Huang is very accommodating and his secretarycontacted us with a few date options. We were finally able to meet him on 3September and had a real good discussion. Mr. Huang is a great personality, always courteous and careful with his wording. We discussed our growingconcerns about the trade war between the two nations, and how likely anyChinese Australian businesses may be spared from the forthcoming escalation, and how Australians could still travel to China and continue their businesses, study or work. The meeting seemed fruitful. It was good to see that Mr. Huangremained positive in Australia and China's economic relationships, his view ofthe unlikely decoupling of the trade relationship, viewing our economies arelargely complementary.

Fighting Racial Tauntsand Accusations

Racial taunts and accusations havebeen a pack and parcel of human nature. We are prone to targeting peoplewithout considering their beliefs and virtues. Many Australian Chineseentrepreneurs have been accused of profiting China and not being concerned aboutthe country they live in. This is classic racism, and it shows that even the21st century harbours such a mindset. However, there is light at the end of thetunnel. Amidst all the racial discrimination, my friend Jaq James raised hervoice against the misdemeanor, helping clear not only my name but also of theChinese community. Please refer to the link for her article: https://www.criticalsocialworkpublishinghouse.com/post/a-counterstrategy-for-hit-pieces-on-chinese-australians

This is significant as many ChineseAustralians, and other overseas Chinese in many countries like Canada, and theUS are starting to adopt that strategy, and these incidents are notablydecreasing.

Where Do I Stand Now?

Regardless of how the mediaportrayed my image, I am an Australian citizen, ready to face all thechallenges. My mission is to promote trade between Australia and China, andhardship is the pack and parcel of every tough decision. The year 2020 has beena bit hard on many people, as I still can hardly recover from the loss of myformer classmate, Ms. Ding Juan, who visited Australia a couple of years ago,and wished that she could buy an aged care property and enjoy her life herewith a few classmates. She took her own life just before Christmas, due todepression and I resonated with her as I was so depressed and suicidal duringmy fight against the big media outlets. The struggles against Covid19 relateddepression were far more challenging for many than any other year.

Iguess that is how life actually is, full of ups and downs. If you areinterested in my life's journey, please follow my alternative LinkedIn account:Survivor-Richard Yuan. I would be willing to share more with you on thatpersonal account as I plan to publish two books in 2021, one is called"Survivor-Cash, Covid19 & My Story", documenting my struggle andlife journey, highlighting the extraordinary year of 2020; the other is a bookon Australian immigration, which I have been planning in the past couple ofyears. I believe the tougher the road is, the more close you are to winning.Thank you, everyone, for your love and support throughout the year, and I hopewe continue to work in favour of both nations.

Happy New Year, and I hope to see you all with a stronger spiritin 2021. Embrace 2021 with a great smile! Stay positive, away fromCovid19, and be strong!
