3759Immense disparity
Thecore of the problem was the immense disparity between the country's productivecapacity and the ability of people to consume. Great innovations in productivetechniques during and after the war raised the output of industry beyond thepurchasing capacity of U.S. farmers and earners.Yellowis the most optimistic color, yet surprisingly, people lose their tempers mostoften in yellow rooms and babies cry more often in them. The reason may be thatyellow is the hardest color on the eye. On the other hand, it speeds upmetabolism and enhances concentration; think of yellow legal pads and post-itnotes.Firstdiscovered in 2007, "fast radio burst" continue to defy explanation. These cosmic chirps last a thousandth of a second. The characteristics of theradio pulses suggested that they came from galaxies billions of light-yearsaway. However, new works point to a much closer origin-flaring star within ourown galaxy.Ifbonus or “incentivepay” schemes work so well for senior executives andbankers, why does everyone not get them? After all, many jobs involve makingimportant decisions or taking risks. Is there anything about corporatedecisions and financial risks that makes these categories of work special interms of how they need to be incentivized and rewarded?Howquickly is the world’s population growing? In the United States and other developedcountries, the current growth rate is very low. In most developing countries, the human population is growing at a rate of 3 people per second. Because ofthis bustling growth rate, the human population is well on its way to reaching9 billion within lifetime.Augustuswas given the powers of an absolute monarch, but he presented himself as thepreserver of republican traditions. He treated the Senate, or state council, with great respect. He successfully reduced the political power of the army byretiring many soldiers, but giving them land or money to keep their loyalty.4574Industrial RevolutionAs tothe Industrial Revolution, one cannot dispute today the fact that it hassucceeded in inaugurating in a number of countries a level of mass prosperitywhich was undreamt of in the days preceding the Industrial Revolution. But, onthe immediate impact of the Industrial Revolution, there were substantialdivergences among writers.
Whatis a country, and how is a country defined? When people ask how many countriesthere are in the world, they expect a simple answer. After all, we've exploredthe whole planet;we have international travel, satellite navigation and plenty of global organizationslike the United Nations, sowe should really know how many countries there are! However, the answerto the question varies according to whom you ask. most people say there are 192 countries, butothers point out that there could be more like 260 of them. So why isn't therea straightforward answer? The problem arises because there isn't a universally agreeddefinition of 'country' and because, for political reasons, some countries findit convenient to recognize or not recognize other countries.Whenit comes to job-hunting, first impressions are critical. Remember, you are marketing a product — yourself — to a potential employer. The first thing the employer sees whengreeting you is your attire; thus, you must make every effort to have theproper dress for the type of job you are seeking. Will dressing properly getyou the job? Of course not, but it will give you a competitive edge and a positive firstimpression.Shouldyou be judged by what you wear? Perhaps not, but the reality is, of course, that you are judged. Throughout the entire job-seeking process employers useshort-cuts, heuristics or rules of thumb, to save time. With cover letters, it’s the opening paragraphand a quick scan of your qualifications. With resumes, it is a quick scan ofyour accomplishments. With the job interview, it’s howyou’re dressed that sets the tone of the interview.Howshould you dress? Dressing conservatively is always the safest route, but youshould also try and do a little investigating of your prospective employer so that what you wearto the interview makes you look as though you fit in with the organization. Ifyou overdress (which is rare but can happen) or underdress (the more likelyscenario), the potential employer may feel that you don’t care enough about thejob.Universityof Otago Center of International Health co-directors Professor Philip Hill andProfessor John Crump share a view that global health is a multidisciplinaryactivity. In theirwork - from Tanzania to the Gambia, from Myanmar to Indonesia and beyond - theytap into a wide range of expertise from across the University, includingclinicians, microbiologists and molecular microbiologists, public healthexperts, economists and mathematicians.Theyhave also forged relationships and collaborations with research and aidagencies around the world.Forthe past seven years Professor Philip Hill has been part of a collaborativetuberculosis research project in Indonesia, with the University of Padjadjaranin Bandung, West Java, undertaking European Commission - funded research intothe causative links between infectious and non-communicable diseases in this case tuberculosis (TB) and diabetes mellitus.Innovationin India is as much due to entrepreneurialism as it is to IT skills, says ArunMaria, chairman of Boston Consulting Group in India.Indianbusinessmen have used IT to create new business models that enable them toprovide services in a more cost-effective way.Thisis not something that necessarily requires expensive technical research.Hesuggests the country’s computer services industry can simply outsource research toforeign universities if the capability is not available locally.“This way, I will have access to the best scientists in the worldwithout having to produce them myself,” said Mr. Maria.544International date lineInternationaldate line, imaginary line, on the earth's surface, generally following the 180°meridian of longitude, where, by international agreement, travelers change dates.Thedateline is necessary to avoid confusion that would otherwise result.Forexample, if an airplane were to travel westward with the sun, 24 hr wouldelapse as it circled the globe, but it would still be the same day for those inthe airplane while it would be one day later for those on the ground belowthem.Thesame problem would arise if two travelers journeyed in opposite directions to apoint on the opposite side of the earth, 180° of longitude distant.Theapparent paradox is resolved by requiring that the traveler is crossing thedateline change his date, thus bringing the travelers into the agreement whenthey meet.Thetopography of the ocean floors is none too well known, since in great areas theavailable soundings are hundreds or even thousands of miles apart. However, the floor of the Atlantic is becoming fairly well known as a result of specialsurveys since 1920.Abroad, well-defined ridge — the Mid-Atlantic ridge — runs north andsouth between Africa and the two Americas and numerous other majorirregularities diversify the Atlantic floor.Closelyspaced soundings show that many parts of the oceanic floors are as rugged asmountainous regions of the continents.Use ofthe recently perfected method of submarine topography.Duringworld war II great strides were made in mapping submarine surfaces, particularly in many parts of the vast Pacific basin.Inhis fascinating book Carbon Detox, George Marshall argues that people are notpersuaded by information.Ourview is formed by the views of people with whom we mix.Ofthe narratives that might penetrate these circles, we are more likely to listento those that offer us some reward.Heproposes that instead of arguing for sacrifice, environmentalists should showwhere the rewards might lie: that understanding what the science is saying andplanning accordingly is the smart thing to do, which will protect yourinterests more effectively than flinging abuse at scientists.Weshould emphasize the old-fashioned virtues of uniting in the face of a crisis,of resourcefulness and community action.Themost vital ingredientin Indian cooking, the basicelement with which all dishes begin and, normally, the cheapestvegetable available, the pink onion is an essential item in the shopping basketof families of all classes.Apopular saying holds that you will never starve because you can always afford aroti (a piece of simple, flatbread) and an onion.Butin recent weeks, the onion has started to seem an unaffordable luxury for India's poor.Over the past few days, another sharp surge in prices has begun to unsettle theinfluential urban middle classes.Thesudden spike in prices has been caused by large exports to neighboringcountries and a shortage of supply.Withits capacity for bringing down governments and scarring political careers, theonion plays an explosive rolein Indian politics. This week, reports of rising onion prices have madefront-page news and absorbed the attention of the governing elite.Foundedafter World War the second by 51 ‘peace-loving states’ combined to opposefuture aggression, the United Nations now counts 192 member nations, including its newestmember, Nauru, Kiribati, and Tonga in 1999, Tuvalu and Yugoslavia in 2000,Switzerland and East Timor in 2002, and Montenegro in 2006.UnitedNations Day has been observedon October 24th since 1948 and celebrates the objectives andaccomplishments of the organization, which was established on October 24th, 1945.TheUN engages in peacekeeping andhumanitarian missions conflict prevention across the globe. Though some say its influence has declined inrecent decades, the United Nations still plays a tremendous role in worldpolitics.
