The Australian government announced on February 1, 2020 that it would ban all but Australian citizens and people with PR from entering the country. The move means that hundreds of thousands of international students will be prevented from returning to school on time.

From the standpoint of local Australian citizens, this move is reckless and ridiculous. Not long ago, the Australian government announced that there would be no ban on flights to and from China in response to the new coronavirus. Even the health ministry said there would be no need to wear masks and mandatory quarantines for 14 days for people returning from China. But a complete ban on entry so soon, and a mild one before, seemed from start to finish an ill-considered policy. From the perspective of international students, this measure has greatly harmed their human rights and is suspected of racial discrimination. Blindly and rashly, the entry is banned, delaying the students for half a year or even a year, which seriously violates Australia's human rights doctrine.

If the Australian government is serious about the health of its citizens and the interests and human rights of the large number of students studying abroad, it should not ban them from entering the country and let them start their classes on time, but require students returning to Australia to be quarantined for 14 days after entering the country. Health authorities in Australia should conduct preventive publicity and health monitoring. The Australian government should not suddenly announce a ban on entry at this time, which is absurdly rash and reckless.
