Canada and China Announce Free-Trade Talks

Canada and China have agreed to launch exploratory talks on a possible free-trade agreement, the leaders of both countries said Thursday.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Chinese Premier Li Keqiang made the announcement in Ottawa, during Mr. Li’s trip to Canada.

加拿大政府和中国政府周四表示，两国已经同意就自由贸易协定展开探索性会谈。

加拿大总理特鲁多(Justin Trudeau)和中国国务院总理李克强在李克强访问加拿大之际在渥太华宣布上述声明。

The goal, Mr. Trudeau said, is to double bilateral trade between Canada and China by 2025. Two-way trade between the two was roughly 60.37 billion Canadian dollars (US$46.08 billion) in 2015, according to Statistics Canada data, trailing only Canada’s bilateral trade with the U.S. and with the European Union.

The launch of trade talks comes as the Trans-Pacific Partnership trade agreement—to which Canada has signed on—is meeting fierce resistance in the U.S. It has become a punching bag for both candidates in the U.S. presidential race despite strong support from businesses.

Huawei to Build on Toehold in India’s Smartphone Market

Chinese maker, No. 3 world-wide but No. 25 in India, will assemble phones, broaden distribution there.

Huawei Technologies Co. is making a renewed push into India’s fast-growing smartphone market, manufacturing locally and broadening its distribution network.

Huawei, the world’s third-largest smartphone maker by shipments behind Samsung Electronics Co. and Apple Inc., said on Friday that it will work with the Indian arm of contract manufacturer Flex International Ltd. to assemble smartphones for the local market starting next month.

By the end of next year, the plant in Chennai will have the capacity to make three million phones annually, Huawei said. The Chinese technology giant is also expanding its distribution network in India by teaming up with more than 50,000 retail outlets by the end of this year.

China is the world’s largest smartphone market, but growth there is slowing, leading Huawei and other Chinese makers to seek opportunities overseas. Shenzhen-based Huawei, which also makes telecommunications networking equipment, has been growing rapidly in the global smartphone market.

Indeed, Huawei’s growth is outpacing that of Samsung and Apple, and Richard Yu, head of the company’s consumer-electronics business, said earlier this year that Huawei aims to overtake both within the next five years. Huawei has little smartphone presence in the U.S., and its networking gear has been effectively banned there due to security concerns; instead, for global expansion it has been focusing on Europe and the Middle East—and now India.

Huawei had just 0.3% of the Indian market in the second quarter, according to research firm IDC, ranking it 25th. Samsung led with a 25% share, followed by India’s Micromax Informatics Ltd. and China’s Lenovo Group Ltd.

Assembling smartphones in India—already home to its telecom-equipment business’s largest overseas research and development center—could help Huawei gain more support from the government, which is promoting local manufacturing under Prime Minister Narendra Modi ’s “Make in India” initiative. Many foreign smartphone makers, such as Samsung and China’s Xiaomi Corp., already assemble in India for the local market.

“Competition surely is very intense, but there is still room for Huawei,” Mr. Singh, the analyst, said.

Australian Consortium Bids for Control of Ausgrid

AustralianSuper and IFM Investors have made an all-Australian bid for Ausgrid, a month after the government rejected an offer from Hong Kong and mainland China bidders.

A pair of Australian infrastructure investors has bid for a controlling interest in the country’s largest electricity network, roughly a month after the federal government formally blocked an offer from Hong Kong and mainland China bidders.

The government of eastern New South Wales state said Friday that it had received an unsolicited proposal for a long-term lease of Ausgrid, a network that provides power to 1.7 million homes and businesses in Sydney and surrounding areas.

The bidding consortium, made up of IFM Investors and AustralianSuper, said in a joint statement it had made an offer for a 50.4% interest in a 99-year lease of Ausgrid. Details of the bid were confidential, it said.

Rolling Stone Magazine Sells 49% Stake to Singapore’s BandLab Technologies

Rolling Stone has struck a chord with a new investor.

BandLab Technologies Ltd., a closely held Singapore-based social music company, has purchased a 49% stake in the storied music brand, including the magazine and its digital assets.

Terms weren’t disclosed. However, the investment doesn’t include ownership in closely held Wenner Media LLC, Rolling Stone’s corporate parent.

France’s Economy Shrank 0.1% in Second Quarter

法国经济二季度环比萎缩0.1%

France’s economy contracted in the second quarter, statistics agency Insee said Friday.

Second-quarter gross domestic product in the eurozone’s second largest economy fell by 0.1% quarter-on-quarter, according to a final reading. Insee previously said GDP growth was flat in the second quarter.

Still, economists expect growth of around the same level this year as in 2015, after a buoyant first quarter when GDP rose 0.7% from the previous quarter.
