Dell-EMC merger creates giant $74 billion tech company
Dell Inc. and EMC Corp. on Wednesday completed what has been dubbed the biggest technology merger in history, joining two data providers and manufacturers of computing equipment into one $74 billion composition.

The transaction has created the world’s largest privately controlled, integrated technology company, Dell said in a statement, and unites Dell’s strength with small business and mid-market customers with EMC’s strength with large enterprises. The aim is to continue to generate profitable growth, especially in the $2 trillion information technology market.
The joint technology portfolio will be able to solve complex problems for customers in the industry’s fast-growing areas of hybrid cloud, software-defined data centers, converged infrastructure, platform-as-a-service, data analytics, mobility and cybersecurity, Dell said.
The joint entity will be called Dell Technologies and will serve 98 percent of Fortune 500 companies, have a combined revenue of $74 billion, and a combined sales force of over 40,000, Dell said.

SoftBank’s purchase of ARM is now complete
Back in July, Japanese telecommunications giant SoftBank announced that they would be purchasing chipmaker ARM for the price of a cool $32 billion. As of last week, that sale is now officially complete. ARM now belongs to SoftBank.

As a result of this change of hands, ARM is now no longer listed on the London Stock Exchange. In spite of what feels like sweeping changes on the surface, SoftBank says that they have no intention of interfering with the chipmaker’s business. ARM will operate as a stand-alone entity and will continue to license its technology to the likes of Samsung and Apple.

Spectra Energy
Canadian pipeline operator Enbridge Inc. on Tuesday agreed to buy Houston’s Spectra Energy Corp. in an all-stock deal valued at about $28 billion, creating a North American energy-infrastructure giant at a time when growth is challenged by lower commodity prices and higher regulatory hurdles.

Tencent Is Now the Most Valuable Company in Asia
The web firm Tencent has become the most valuable company in Asia, and one of the top 10 in the world by market capitalization.
Stock in Tencent has continued to surge, rising 3.8% in Hong Kong on Monday. That took it to a valuation of HK$1.976 trillion ($255 billion). That jump takes Tencent narrowly past the market cap of China Mobile.

Tencent is best known for its gaming operation, its QQ and WeChat social networks, and its online ad business, although it also offers services in the realms of payments (a likely growth area), cloud storage, and entertainment.
The company became China’s most valuable tech company last month. So far this year its stock price has risen by more than 40%.
Tencent’s success can largely be attributed to China’s current boom in consumer spending, and the firm has in the last couple years become a major investor in the venture capital scene.

Global Economy Week Ahead

MONDAY:
Fed governor Lael Brainard and Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta President Dennis Lockhart provide a last chance to hear from policy makers before the central bank’s self-imposed gag order ahead of its Sept. 20-21 meeting.
Ms. Brainard has been a skeptic of increasing rates when inflation is still low, while Mr. Lockhart is a centrist seen as closely aligned with Fed Chairwoman Janet Yellen.

Japan’s government will release July machinery order data, likely showing Japanese companies continue to be cautious about investment. Core machinery orders, seen as a leading indicator of capital spending, are expected to have fallen 3.1% month on month in July.

TUESDAY:
China will report August data on industrial production. It is expected to show factory output rose 6.2% from a year earlier last month, from July’s 6.0%, fueled by new orders and ongoing policy support.

THURSDAY:
The Bank of England is expected to hold its benchmark interest rate steady at its meeting. Minutes of officials’ deliberations may offer fresh clues to their thinking on Britain’s post-Brexit economy, particularly on whether another rate cut is still in the cards later this year given that growth appears to be holding up better than expected.

In the U.S., the government will release data on retail sales. Consumer spending has been a bright spot for the U.S. economy this year, but a flat July reading raised concerns about the outlook for the second half of 2016.
