The Australia-China Helicobacter Research Fellowship is designed to give candidates specialist training in H. pylori culturing, sequencing and analysis, along with an introduction to research at The University of Western Australia.

Students will undertake a week of workshops in research foundations, before commencing the specialist training program. The training will be primarily provided by Dr Alfred Tay, Manager, Helicobacter Research Laboratory.

Throughout the program, candidates will be expected to integrate into the research activities at The University of Western Australia and make the most of the University’s library facilities for independent study when not undertaking training.

All candidates will receive a Certificate of Participation. Candidates undertaking the Fellowship will be required to sign a confidentiality agreement with The University of Western Australia.

To be eligible, candidates must have:

• a Memorandum of Understanding between the candidate’s host university/hospital/institution and The University of Western Australia. This can be facilitated by The University of Western Australia and takes approximately two weeks.

• eligibility and approvals to apply for an appropriate visa to travel to Australia.

• basic knowledge in microbiology, basic aseptic technique, and basic understanding in Linux and other bio-informative tools.

• proficiency in written and oral English.

• OS X 10.9, 10.10, 10.11 and macOS 10.12

• Linux: RHEL 6.0 and later, Suse 13.1 and later (the software is expected to run without problem on other recent Linux systems, but we do not guarantee this)

The program will commence on Monday 30 July and will run for four weeks.

AU $15,000

Three (3) scholarship placements are available per year. These scholarships waive the AU $15,000 program costs but other costs still apply (see below).

Included in the program costs:

• accommodation provided by an Australian homestay company, including most meals (some lunches not included).

• welcome and farewell functions.

• training and research expenses.

• supervision support.

Not included in the program costs:

• transport, including public transport as required when in Perth.

• airfares and transit fees from China to Perth, Western Australia.

• insurance (travel and health).

• weekend social and cultural activities, daily lunches and incidental living costs.

• visa costs.
