The Queensland Government is investing in a new public tertiary teaching hospital on the Sunshine Coast to meet growing demand for hospital services and train local residents to be the health workforce of the future.

Sunshine Coast Public University Hospital will revolutionise healthcare on the Coast and offer a range of new and expanded free public hospital services, supported by highly trained and specialised staff, to safely care for patients with complex or life-threatening conditions. This means about 10,000 patients each year will not have to travel to Brisbane for complex treatment.

The hospital will open with about 450 beds in 2016, growing to a 738 bed facility by 2021. It can be expanded to 900 beds beyond 2021 if needed.

The public hospital is being built as part of the 20 hectare Kawana Health Campus that will incorporate the hospital's Skills, Academic and Research Centre (SARC), a co-located private hospital operated by Ramsay Health Care and opportunities for health-related commercial developments.

Sunshine Coast Public University Hospital will form part of the Sunshine Coast Hospital and Health Service's network of hospitals, which includes Nambour General Hospital, Caloundra Health Service, Gympie Hospital, Maleny Soldiers Memorial Hospital and a comprehensive range of community and primary health services.
