Commercial Analyst

A global company in the Energy sector are looking a passionate and highly experienced Commercial Analyst to join their wholesale trading team.

About the role

With a focus on data analytics, forecasting and hands on model development this is an exciting opportunity to deliver accurate insights and energy market analysis to stakeholders across all business areas.

The primary responsibilities of this role are to employ wide-ranging energy, mathematical and economic skills to support not only members of our trading team, but a wide range of stakeholders across the business (e.g. strategy, risk, retail and finance).

About you

You will have an analytical mindset and a strong aptitude and passion for problem solving. You will also have strong analytical skills and be commercially astute, offering practical insights and recommendations to a range of stakeholders (including senior management). You will be confident working with a wide range of data sets and be able to utilise a number of data interrogation/manipulation techniques to test hypotheses and drive business benefits.

Key Responsibilities

• Provide ongoing support to wholesale trading team to ensure smooth operational process, such as optimisation tools for our short/medium term contract and generation positions, and forecasting models for retail demands

• Hands-on development of a wide range of models, tools and reports in MS Excel, R, Python etc.

• Develop tools and techniques to extract, manipulate, clean, utilise and analyse large amounts of data

• Work collaboratively with a wide range of stakeholders, to test, and investigate new innovative solutions that can enhance existing modelling and reporting tools.

• Provide specialist business analysis, information modelling and data management to support key strategy and business development activities

• Monitor relevant commodity markets and assess implications for generation and retail assets.

• Support budget and medium term planning processes and Trading and Portfolio Management planning activities

• Contribute to regular and ad-hoc valuation exercises

• Assist with regular reporting, including production of monthly management reports

• And, there’s a lot more; including delegated projects or tasks required by the business.

  
  

Skills

• Tertiary degree in relevant discipline e.g. mathematics, science, computer science, software engineering, economics, operations research, finance or similar numerate discipline. A postgraduate degree (or equivalent experience in a relevant field) advantageous.

• Solid experience in the energy industry, or if not, a demonstrated ability to rapidly learn new concepts and skills

• Excellent analytical thinker and problem solver, ability to deal with complexity and ambiguity

• Strong Excel/VBA skills and experience building and understanding complicated Excel models

• Strong technical skills and experience using SQL to extract, manage, manipulate and merge large volumes of data from disparate source systems

• Experience in R / python or similar

• Detail focussed and thorough, yet able to know when to take a pragmatic approach

• Ability to work in a high-pressure environment and manage multiple work requests at one time

• A high standard of communication skills (verbal and written) with the ability to present clearly and concisely to peers and senior management levels.

• Experience working successfully with senior management to identify, scope and deliver initiatives aligned to business objectives.

• Ability to confidently communicate and negotiate with stakeholders at all levels to drive positive outcomes which directly impact profitability
