Part 1

1
Do you like to watch the sky? (yes or no,第一人称)
Well, absolutely! Especially after I have come to Australia, looking at the clear sky has become one of my hobbies because, you know, the sky in my hometown right now is not so pleasant due to the haze (雾霾). The sky here, on the contrary, is still mostly clear and blue, unless when there is a rain or even hailstorm (冰雹) like last month. So I often sit on the veranda during sunny days and look at the sky to chill.

2

What is the sky like at night in your hometown?(open question,

Speaking of the night sky in my hometown, I have to admit that there is a big difference between now and then. I used to see many stars at night when I was little, but right now, thanks to the air pollution and glaring (耀眼的) city lights, the only object I can see in the night sky is the moon.

3
Do you like to watch stars? (yes or no,第一人称)

Yeah, I always enjoy looking at the stars whenever possible, unfortunately most of the placed I have lived are metropolis (大都市), therefore I rarely see a sky full of stars but time to time I could catch several stars and I cherish every chance to look at them.

Part 2

Describe a time you watched the sky.
You should say:
when this happened
who you were with
what you saw
and how you felt about watching the sky.
Donovan
The time I remember the most clearly looking at the sky was the night right after I have finished my last exam of undergraduate courses. I was chilling with my housemates, who were also good friends of mine in the backyard. We were drinking some beer and chit-chatting. Then I noticed that there seemed to be more stars in the sky than before, so I pointed them out to my friends.

After that we started sharing our knowledge about astronomy which is full of wild guesses because none of us has actually learnt it. I still remember that I confidently pointed out the sign of Southern Cross (南十字星), but then I was corrected by a friend claiming where his finger was pointing at was the real Southern Cross. We then entered a debate that couldn’t end in an agreement.

I never really paid attention to the night sky in Australia until that moment because my course curriculum is quite intense and I spent most of my leisure time indoor. That night however, is my first time to feel no pressure at all and fully relax. Maybe that’s why I could appreciate the stars which I never really noticed before. Now those friends sharing the memory of that night are mostly back to their countries. I often think of them and how the skies in their countries look like when I look at the sky now.

Part 3

Donovan
1
Have you ever taken a course about stars? (yes or no, 第一人称)
Yes, I’ve taken Introductory Astronomy as an elective in my second year of university. I took it because a friend told me it was an easy course and gives full academic credits. In this course is where I started to gain some serious knowledge of stars other than the tales and fables I knew. We were taught of the patterns and whereabouts of some of the famous constellations like the Zodiac signs, although I doubt if I could find them in the sky in actual.

2
Is it important to study stars? (yes or no, 第三人称)
Well, in terms of importance I would say there is no absolute necessity of learning stars to help our lives or work, except maybe when people get lost in the wild and have too use stars to navigate. However, my personal experience tells me that knowing about stars is great fun, especially when I realized that many of the stars we see are hundreds of lightyears away, and the fact that we are basically looking at the images of stars from the past.

3
What’s your favourite star? (open question,
Donovan
Sample answer 1: My favourite star is definitely the Sun. To begin with, I wouldn’t exist without it. The sun provides heat and light to our world as well as different climates and seasons. As far as I know, the sun is regarded as the creator and protector of the nature and mankind in many cultures. I personally love the sun because I just can’t stand coldness in winter, and being in the sunlight keeps me warm.
Sample answer 2: My favourite star is the Sirius. It is known to be the brightest star that can be seen from Earth. It is also one of the few stars I could recognize in the night sky as it just outshines every other star, literally. Another reason I like this star is because one of my favourite character in book is Sirius Black in the Harry Potter series. He was born in an infamous family while still tried his best to help the good, just like the Sirius being the brightest star in the dark night. This spirit is also what I aspire to in the future.
